Swale Council leaders have drawn up a “wish list” of leisure facilities they want to improve as part of efforts to deal with a potential population boom in North Kent.
An increased supply of homes is critical for affordability for a generation of renters and would be buyers. Labour certainly has ambitious plans to reform planning, build a new generation of towns, devolve stronger powers to mayors and fast track approval for urban brownfield development.
Swale’s population is expected to grow by 29% by 2038 with 19,404 new homes earmarked to be built as per the authority’s local plan. The increase would see the number of people living in the borough go from 151,965 people to 196,594 – a rise of 44,629.
Sheppey swimming pool in Sheerness and Swallows Leisure Centre in Sittingbourne could receive extensive facelifts.
The proposals are detailed in Swale council’s strategy for sites across the borough over the next 14 years as it expects more than 44,000 extra people to move in.
Among them is the 42-year-old Sheerness swimming pool, which is part of the larger Sheppey Leisure Centre Complex, which could go from six lanes to eight. It was last renovated almost 20 years ago and is in “need of refurbishment”, according to the council report.
The Swallows’ sports hall in Sittingbourne, which was built over 30 years ago and refurbished in 2005, is also put forward for a “refresh”. The report says it is running at 100% of its capacity during peak hours.
These ideas are in the very early stages and would have to go through the consultation phases first. However, this strategy shows the residents of Swale what the Council would like to achieve in the coming years.
